Mercenary Type was formed around the songwriting of guitarist/vocalist Bruce Stewart. “For years I was obsessed with recording (knowing how difficult it had been to keep a band together), and so always being involved with the machinery – always writing new songs, experimenting with technology but alas, turning into an engineer! Inspiration finally came when bassist Colleen Bell and I decided to return to live playing. We were most inspired by a series of jams with old Melbourne band-buddy Nigel Rough [Jim Keays/ Mike Rudd]. These jams were always powerful and rocky – like going back to Cream or ZZ Top. Mercenary Type was forged through these jams – Colleen and I taking on much bigger roles and bigger lines that sparked ideas for my original songs.” With the aid of new drummer Laurie Keating [John Paul Young/Doug Parkinson] - Mercenary Type was born: an original power-trio that also includes songs by King Crimson, Billy Cobham, Tommy Bolin and Edgar Winter.
